Connection and communication are the heartbeat of wholesome family living. They build trust, understanding, and emotional bonds that unite family members. When we talk, listen, and share our thoughts and feelings, we create a safe and nurturing environment where everyone’s voice is valued.

This openness fosters empathy, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills, ensuring that challenges are met with cooperation rather than conflict. It’s through connection and communication that we celebrate each other’s achievements, support during tough times, and create lasting memories. Active listening is key to effective communication! We were always told you have two ears and one mouth so you should do twice as much listening as you do talking.  Being in the moment when your family members are talking to you will go a long way in creating meaningful and healthy relationships!

Sharing thoughts and feelings can seem a little mushy but in reality, deep down we all just want to be heard and understood.  Sharing emotions is not just for the females in the home! One of our favorite parenting courses, Positive Parenting Solutions, teaches us to use “I feel” statements. These statements help us explain how we are feeling instead of pointing fingers or criticizing others. It is open and honest communication and is a great tool to help calmly and respectfully work through disagreeable moments.

Quality family time 

Family meals can be a time when sharing thoughts, and feelings, and actively listening to each other can be in full force. It is one of the only times that we regularly gather as a whole family so it is important to take advantage of this time!  A secret to making family meal times a success is to put screens and technology away!

Family meetings provide another opportunity for every family member’s voice to be heard!  We try to consistently hold weekly family meetings where we have a spiritual message and a discussion about our upcoming events and goals, allow for thoughts and feelings to be expressed, have a simple family activity, and finish with a family treat!

Bonding activities have become some of our most cherished time together.  One simple way we bond with our kids is having what we call “special time” with each child individually, one-on-one with mom and then one-on-one with day, for 10 minutes a day.  During this time we do whatever our child wants to do!  This is a tool we learned from the Positive Parenting Solutions course and it has made a HUGE difference. We started feeding our kids pureed vegetables as babies and they have all grown to love veggies!  

Find the fruits and vegetables that you like and search for healthy recipes that incorporate them! Be mindful of your sugar intake.  Remember little changes and adjustments can make a huge difference in the long run!

Be consistently active!  Some ways we like to stay active in our home are going on family walks/bike rides, exercising 5 per week doing at-home Beachbody workouts, and Alex even does triathlons! 

Mental and Emotional Well-being

Mental health is a crucial aspect of wholesome living. It entails managing stress, practicing self-care, seeking support when needed, and maintaining a positive outlook on life. Emotional well-being involves recognizing and addressing emotions healthily.

We are actively learning and growing together as husband and wife as we started this blog together. Life is so much more fun when you are always actively learning!

One way we foster a love for learning in our home is through books! We read to and with our kids every single day.  Books are a way to take decades of experience the writer has on a topic and consume it in days! Jim Kwik is a brain coach and has various resources (books, podcasts, and online training programs) that will keep your learning appetite alive! 

Supporting educational goals 

We value both formal and nonformal types of education!  We both have degrees in nursing, Jessica has her Bachelor and Alex has his doctorate in anesthesia. We teach our kids the importance of education. It will open opportunities that you never thought possible! Does it require sacrifice? Yes, immense! BUT it’s worth it!

One way we foster curiosity and exploration is by teaching our kids to dream big! We try and provide our young kids with wholesome books, toys, and movies that will foster curiosity!

Be a go-getter! Always do what you say you are going to do! Be someone that can be counted on!  This can apply to the entire family regardless of their age.  Make it a point to create age-appropriate responsibilities for every member of the family.  We like to have what we call family contributions that allow family members to feel significant as a contributing member of the family.  This can be very empowering!

We have what we call “vision boards” that have images that represent the goals and dreams we have! We each place our vision boards somewhere in our home where we can view them often and be reminded of the goals and dreams we are working towards. It has been so fulfilling and invigorating to hear our children accomplish something and say “I am working towards my goal!” It is a priceless moment as a parent to watch our children understand what it means to work hard towards something!

Our family motto is “We can do hard things!” When you push yourself and get out of your comfort zone growth happens and it is SO satisfying!

Jessica is the master of making things special for our family! Others are always a big deal!  When you truly care about others you want to acknowledge their passions!

Another family motto is “People are more important than things.” We try to express excitement and joy towards other’s accomplishments and make birthdays a day to celebrate that person and how special they are! There is so much in life to celebrate!

Traditions

It is so vital to the health of a family and its individuals to have traditions!  Just remember Tevye from “Fiddler on the Roof”!  Seriously though, traditions give us events to look forward to and things we can rely on!

Living in a world of technology, it can be so easy to find ourselves spending way too much time on our devices.  Technology is a wonderful tool but if we are not careful, it can become an addiction that consumes us.  

It is important in wholesome living to set boundaries with your technology use.  Most devices allow you to track time usage and even limit the use of devices once set time limits have been reached.  

One way we like to use screen time is by watching wholesome family movies. There are some companies out there like Vidangel that allow you to edit out inappropriate content of movies so you can enjoy them as a whole family!  

Another great screen-free activity we have found for our kids is a kids’ audio player called Storypod!

Safety with Technology

It is also important to create a safe environment in your home for technology usage.  We like to have computers in public areas so that everyone can see what is being viewed.  This helps protect every family member from getting into unsafe online situations such as pornography.  Another idea to consider for promoting safety is to have everyone turn in their devices such as cell phones when they go to bed at night.  When we are alone, we are the most vulnerable!
