Step 1: Communication and Connection

family communicating

Connection and communication are the heartbeat of wholesome family living. They build trust, understanding, and emotional bonds that unite family members. When we talk, listen, and share our thoughts and feelings, we create a safe and nurturing environment where everyone’s voice is valued.

This openness fosters empathy, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills, ensuring that challenges are met with cooperation rather than conflict. It’s through connection and communication that we celebrate each other’s achievements, support during tough times, and create lasting memories. In essence, they’re the glue that holds families together, making every day richer and more meaningful, fostering a harmonious and fulfilling family life.

The significance of open and effective communication

Active listening is key to effective communication! We were always told you have two ears and one mouth so you should do twice as much listening as you do talking.  Being in the moment when your family members are talking to you will go a long way in creating meaningful and healthy relationships!

Sharing thoughts and feelings can seem a little mushy but in reality, deep down we all just want to be heard and understood.  Sharing emotions is not just for the females in the home! One of our favorite parenting courses, Positive Parenting Solutions, teaches us to use “I feel” statements. These statements help us explain how we are feeling instead of pointing fingers or criticizing others. It is open and honest communication and is a great tool to help calmly and respectfully work through disagreeable moments.

Quality family time

Family meals can be a time when sharing thoughts, and feelings, and actively listening to each other can be in full force. It is one of the only times that we regularly gather as a whole family so it is important to take advantage of this time!  A secret to making family meal times a success is to put screens and technology away!

Family meetings provide another opportunity for every family member’s voice to be heard!  We try to consistently hold weekly family meetings where we have a spiritual message and a discussion about our upcoming events and goals, allow for thoughts and feelings to be expressed, have a simple family activity, and finish with a family treat!

Bonding activities have become some of our most cherished time together.  One simple way we bond with our kids is having what we call “special time” with each child individually, one-on-one with mom and then one-on-one with day, for 10 minutes a day.  During this time we do whatever our child wants to do!  This is a tool we learned from the Positive Parenting Solutions course and it has made a HUGE difference. Highly recommend this course for all parents!

Conflict resolutions

Teaching constructive conflict resolution skills is important not only in the home but in the workplace and beyond! A great resource we have found for creating a peaceful home is the book “The Anatomy of Peace.”

Promoting empathy and understanding helps us to better know each other as family members.  It also, interestingly, allows us to better know ourselves as we develop emotional intelligence

Step 2: Values and Beliefs

family beliefs

Values and beliefs form the foundation of wholesome family living. They provide a shared moral compass, guiding decisions and actions. When families align around common values like kindness, respect, and honesty, it creates a harmonious atmosphere where trust flourishes.

These shared principles shape family traditions, rituals, and daily interactions, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose. Values and beliefs help families to navigate challenges, instill a sense of responsibility, and create a nurturing environment where everyone can grow and thrive together, promoting a truly wholesome family life.

Instilling core values and ethics

As Christians, living a life in line with the teachings of Christ is at the very center of our wholesome living.  To be completely honest, Christ and His teachings are what we base every other part of our wholesome living on!

Our beliefs are based on Christianity, but no matter what your core beliefs may be, make that the center of all you do as a family!

Identifying and discussing family values

It is important to identify and discuss what your core family values and beliefs are.  Becoming united on your family values and beliefs will bring great power and harmony into your home!

Some of the key values and ethics that we strive to instill in our lives as a family are honesty, integrity, empathy, responsibility, gratitude, selflessness, and integrity.

Encouraging respect for diverse perspectives

It is also very important to encourage respect for diverse perspectives.  The beauty of our world is that there are so many different cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds.  We should always strive to learn from and respect others at all times!

Step 3: Routines and Structure

family planning

Routines and structure provide a foundation for stability and predictability in our daily lives, offering a sense of order and security. This helps individuals, especially children, establish healthy habits, manage their time effectively, and reduce stress by creating a clear balance for tasks, responsibilities, and leisure activities.

If you have young children…we feel your pain!  Morning and bedtime can be some of the toughest parts of parenting!  Again, we have found great tools in the Positive Parenting Solutions to make morning and bedtime smoother.  Consistency and empowerment for your kids are big factors during these routines.  For you as the parents, starting and ending your day off with consistent and enriching routines can significantly help you mentally, emotionally, and physically.

We have found ourselves to be more productive in every aspect of our lives when we set aside specific time for things and stay committed to those routines.  These can apply to your children and their homework, or your family responsibilities/chores. We humans thrive on routines and it always feels good to have things that are predictable when we live in an ever-changing world.

For many families, having a family calendar helps to stay committed to your routines.  Everyone can visualize what is coming up in our family.

Amongst the routines, it is important to keep a balance between personal and family time.  Quality time with those you love fosters deep relationships and creates lasting memories.

Step 4: Health and Well-being

Physical Health

Wholesome living involves maintaining good physical health through a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate rest. This includes eating nutritious foods, staying hydrated, and engaging in physical activities that promote fitness and vitality.

We started feeding our kids pureed vegetables as babies and they have all grown to love veggies!

Find the fruits and vegetables that you like and search for healthy recipes that incorporate them! Be mindful of your sugar intake.  Remember little changes and adjustments can make a huge difference in the long run!

Be consistently active!  Some ways we like to stay active in our home are going on family walks/bike rides, exercising 5 per week doing at-home Beachbody workouts, and Alex even does triathlons!

Mental and Emotional Well-being

Mental health is a crucial aspect of wholesome living. It entails managing stress, practicing self-care, seeking support when needed, and maintaining a positive outlook on life. Emotional well-being involves recognizing and addressing emotions healthily.

The last part of your health that often gets overlooked is quality sleep!  That oh so evasive quality sleep!  The National Sleep Foundation has great resources on how to get better sleep.  They say that creating a darker and cooler (60-67 degrees) room along with regular exercise are simple ways to improve the quality of sleep.  Below are their recommendations for quantity of sleep by age:

Step 5: Education and Lifelong Learning

Family reading together

Embracing opportunities for personal and intellectual growth is another aspect of wholesome living. This may involve pursuing education, acquiring new skills, or engaging in lifelong learning. We are actively learning and growing together as husband and wife as we started this blog together. Life is so much more fun when you are always actively learning!

Fostering a love for learning

One way we foster a love for learning in our home is through books! We read to and with our kids every single day.  Books are a way to take decades of experience the writer has on a topic and consume it in days! Jim Kwik is a brain coach and has various resources (books, podcasts, and online training programs) that will keep your learning appetite alive!

Supporting educational goals

We value both formal and nonformal types of education!  We both have degrees in nursing, Jessica has her Bachelor and Alex has his doctorate in anesthesia. We teach our kids the importance of education. It will open opportunities that you never thought possible! Does it require sacrifice? Yes, immense! BUT it’s worth it!

Encouraging curiosity and exploration

One way we foster curiosity and exploration is by teaching our kids to dream big! We try and provide our young kids with wholesome books, toys, and movies that will foster curiosity!

Step 6: Responsibility and Independence

Wholesome living often includes a sense of purpose and meaning in one’s life. This personal and familial happiness can be achieved through pursuing passions, setting goals, and engaging in activities that bring a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction.

Be a go-getter! Always do what you say you are going to do! Be someone that can be counted on!  This can apply to the entire family regardless of their age.  Make it a point to create age-appropriate responsibilities for every member of the family.  We like to have what we call family contributions that allow family members to feel significant as a contributing member of the family.  This can be very empowering!

We have what we call “vision boards” that have images that represent the goals and dreams we have! We each place our vision boards somewhere in our home where we can view them often and be reminded of the goals and dreams we are working towards. It has been so fulfilling and invigorating to hear our children accomplish something and say “I am working towards my goal!” It is a priceless moment as a parent to watch our children understand what it means to work hard towards something!

Our family motto is “We can do hard things!” When you push yourself and get out of your comfort zone growth happens and it is SO satisfying!

Step 7: Family Traditions and Rituals

family traditions

For some individuals, cultural or spiritual practices are integral to wholesome living. Engaging in activities related to one’s culture or spirituality can provide a sense of connection and purpose.

Celebrating special occasions

Jessica is the master of making things special for our family! Others are always a big deal!  When you truly care about others you want to acknowledge their passions!

Another family motto is “People are more important than things.” We try to express excitement and joy towards other’s accomplishments and make birthdays a day to celebrate that person and how special they are! There is so much in life to celebrate!

It is so vital to the health of a family and its individuals to have traditions!  Just remember Tevye from “Fiddler on the Roof”!  Seriously though, traditions give us events to look forward to and things we can rely on!

Think back to your childhood!  What are some of your most fond memories?  If you are like us, many of those memories had to do with family traditions!  Whether that is family trips, family holidays, family sporting events, or any other family event!  If you don’t have family traditions, start now!  Creating traditions is so fulfilling!

Step 8: Community and Social Engagement

community connections

Social Connections

Wholesome living emphasizes the importance of nurturing positive relationships with family, friends, and the community. Social connections contribute to a sense of belonging and emotional support.

Wholesome living should extend beyond just our own four walls.  If we have truly mastered wholesome living as a family we will naturally want to engage in positive relationships outside the home.  Become active in your community.  Be a pillar for positive change wherever you live.

Social Responsibility

Another aspect of community is being mindful of the environment.  Taking steps to reduce one’s ecological footprint can also be part of wholesome living. This includes practices like recycling, conserving resources, and reducing waste.

Step 9: Technology and Screen Time

Wholesome Technology

Living in a world of technology, it can be so easy to find ourselves spending way too much time on our devices.  Technology is a wonderful tool but if we are not careful, it can become an addiction that consumes us.

It is important in wholesome living to set boundaries with your technology use.  Most devices allow you to track time usage and even limit the use of devices once set time limits have been reached.

One way we like to use screen time is by watching wholesome family movies. There are some companies out there like Vidangel that allow you to edit out inappropriate content of movies so you can enjoy them as a whole family!

Another great screen-free activity we have found for our kids is a kids’ audio player called Storypod!

Safety with Technology

It is also important to create a safe environment in your home for technology usage.  We like to have computers in public areas so that everyone can see what is being viewed.  This helps protect every family member from getting into unsafe online situations such as pornography.  Another idea to consider for promoting safety is to have everyone turn in their devices such as cell phones when they go to bed at night.  When we are alone, we are the most vulnerable!

Key Considerations For Successfully Having Wholesome Living for your whole family

It’s important to note that the specifics of wholesome living can vary from person to person, and what is considered wholesome may differ based on individual values, beliefs, and cultural backgrounds. Family dynamics may also differ with only one parent in the home, multigenerational families living together, or many other types of circumstances. Ultimately, the goal of wholesome living is to create a balanced and fulfilling life that promotes both physical and mental health, emotional well-being, positive relationships, and a sense of purpose, no matter what the family dynamic may be!

There will be times that you fall short of what your vision is for wholesome living for the whole family.  DON’T GIVE UP!!!  Learn from your downfalls, make adjustments, and keep moving forward!

One secret to a lifelong commitment to wholesome living is the Law of Attraction!  Simply put, the Law of Attraction is using the power of your mind to attract into your life whatever you want.  However, this law works both ways, so if you have negative thoughts, you will attract negative results.  Whatever you consistently think about will become your reality!  Use this law in your favor!

Some simple ways we use this law are by first being grateful for what we do have and second by creating a vision board for what we want!  The power of daily visualization cannot be overstated!

We are not perfect, none of us are.  A wholesome life for your family will probably look very different than it does for ours. Still, this step-by-step guide contains key principles we have learned from experience and research.  Take these principles and apply them to your unique family!  It is our hope that you can find wholesome living for your whole family, now and in the future!

Frequently Asked Questions

The keys to a happy life can vary from person to person, but there are three fundamental aspects that are often considered essential for a fulfilling and contented life:

  1. Positive Relationships: Building and maintaining positive, meaningful relationships with family, friends, and loved ones is crucial to happiness. Healthy social connections provide emotional support, a sense of belonging, and opportunities for shared experiences and joy. Nurturing these relationships can lead to a happier and more fulfilling life.
  2. Purpose and Meaning: Having a sense of purpose and meaning in life gives it direction and fulfillment. This could be derived from personal goals, a career, a passion, or contributing to a cause greater than oneself. When individuals feel they are making a positive impact or pursuing something they deeply value, they tend to report higher levels of happiness and life satisfaction.
  3. Health and Well-being: Physical and mental health are foundational to a happy life. Taking care of one’s body through regular exercise, a balanced diet, sufficient sleep, and managing stress contributes to overall well-being. Additionally, tending to one’s mental health by practicing mindfulness, seeking support when needed, and maintaining a positive outlook on life can significantly enhance happiness.

Living a wholesome life offers a multitude of benefits that encompass physical health, mental well-being, emotional stability, and overall life satisfaction. These benefits not only improve individual well-being but also have a positive impact on relationships, work, and the ability to lead a fulfilling life.

While “wholesome” and “happy” are related concepts, they are not synonymous. They are often used in different contexts and carry distinct meanings:

Wholesome refers to something that is characterized by qualities such as purity, healthiness, goodness, and moral integrity. It conveys a sense of being unspoiled or untarnished and is often associated with behaviors, actions, or content that is considered morally or socially virtuous.

Happy, on the other hand, specifically relates to an emotional state of joy, contentment, or well-being. It is the feeling of experiencing positive emotions and a sense of satisfaction or fulfillment.

While a wholesome lifestyle or relationship can contribute to happiness by fostering physical and emotional well-being, creating a supportive environment, and promoting positive values, they are not synonymous with happiness itself. Happiness is a broader and more subjective emotional state that can result from various factors, including but not limited to wholesome living.
